Milady Coffee Building In Lincoln, Nebraska

When I was in Lincoln, Nebraska last year, I saw this great coffee company name painted onto the side of a building. I don’t know the history of this building, or the coffee company for that matter. The painting looks dated, so it is safe to assume that it is real and old.

Seeing this painting made me think about branding. I have not seen Milady Coffee sold in any stores that I can recall. But their image lives on, at least in Lincoln, Nebraska. Let’s pretend one hundred years from now your business is gone and all that remains to remember it is your name and logo painted on the side of a building. What would your logo and visuals say about you? Will they stand the test of time?

The advertising itself is also notable. Visually it is cool, and effective, how the creators inserted “IS BETTER” between MILADY and COFFEE. The change in font size and in font color are really well done and this nicely blends a brand name with a motto or slogan.

1981 Chivas Regal Whisky Ad

I must admit, I have no idea what’s going on here. But, it’s winter time and this seemed like a good time to utilize a visual that involves snow.

“It’s enough to make you want to get lost”, that was an interesting way to go with this ad. Are they insinuating that the dog is lost, or wants to get lost? Is a dog getting lost the first thing we’re supposed to think of when we see a dog in the snow? Are they suggesting that if you’re a dog and you have a bottle of Chivas around your neck, attached to your leash, that you want to get lost? Any conclusion from this ad, in my mind, is difficult to ultimately get to.

We can fast forward 30-some years and we know Chivas Regal is still around, so at least this 1981 ad did not run them out of business.
