Save the date, Record Store Day 2014 is taking place across America on Saturday, April 19. I am a big fan of Record Store Day, read my post from last year leading up to Record Store Day 2013. Not much has changed, so I can keep this post short as well.

There is always fresh new music being released on Record Store Day. But, a lot of the places that hold events for Record Store Day, they offer live music performances. Anyway, it’s a great way to show some support for you local independent music store(s). So, get out there on April 19th and report back on your adventures.

Check out their nifty countdown clock.

B.Y.O.Vinyl Night at Mom’s Bar in Los Angeles

Mom’s Bar, located in Los Angeles, is doing something that I like, and I think it is creative at the same time. As the flier below clearly shows, Mom’s Bar is about to start having customers bring in their own vinyl records for playing in the bar on Tuesday nights.

This is a really good way to get business in the door on what is probably a pretty slow night of the week. This is also good advertising for the bar’s marketing partner Touch Vinyl. The promotional idea of also including a free drink if your vinyl is chosen for play, that is also pretty cool.

As some who still listens to vinyl, I am always glad to see vinyl getting attention, this encourages the small music shops to still carry vinyl, it encourages producers to continue to produce vinyl and if vinyl becomes hip again, well that’s just groovy.

Have you seen anyone else offer a vinyl night? Have you seen other really good partner marketing ideas?

Record Store Day The Parkhurst Group

Saturday is Record Store Day across America. It is a great day to celebrate independent businesses and a great way to celebrate great sounds. Check out RecordStoreDay.com to find a location near you and to find out what bands are releasing special items just for Record Store Day. Many record stores will be having live music along with other great specials. For instance, in Houston, Cactus Music will be offering free beer from Saint Arnold, along with free breakfast in the morning, and free coffee, provided by Katz Coffee who has a special Record Store Day blend, called Black Vinyl Blend. How cool is that?

I’ll have a recap after Record Store Day, with many notes and highlights. If you venture out and want to share your day with others, use hashtags #RecordStoreDay #rsd2013 #rsd13 on Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Pinterest…and anywhere else you might share your thoughts, pics and purchases.

Monday night, December 17, is the final chance to catch John Egan live at The Big Easy Blues in 2012. John will be back at The Big Easy after the fist of the year, but with the following two Mondays being Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, it’s a good time for John to work on some new music, finalize the vinyl pressing and prepare for Memphis (more on Memphis in a later post). Anyway, head out to hear John on Monday night, and follow him on twitter @GinDiaries to be kept up to date on all his appearances and other news.

If you get out to one of John’s shows, be sure to let us know what you think, either here or on twitter @ParkhurstGroup, especially if you take pictures.

Blues Artist John Egan Featured In New York Times Article

Houston blues musician John Egan was featured in this article about going to record stores recently in the New York Times:

John Egan, “Phantoms” (Gin Diaries)

The son of a former Houston Rockets point guard and coach of the same name, Mr. Egan is a regular presence on the Houston club scene, playing dark but rich-sounding solo blues on a resonator guitar.

“He’s been kicking around Houston for years and just starting to get the credit he deserves,” Mr. Bishop said. “He’s a stomping, hollering bluesman. But in a lot of ways, along with the blues, it’s also got an outsider-folk element to it, like it’s cut from the cloth of a classic Tom Waits record. It’s a really dark and masterful album.”
