The Houston Astros and Pro Sport Rebranding

The Houston Astros are moving from the National League to the American League when the next baseball season begins. The team also changed ownership earlier this year. So, for the new owners, it seemed time to change the look of the team, and not just the roster spots. This past Friday the Astros held an event at their home ballpark where fans were invited to witness the new uniforms in store for 2013 and beyond.

Something like this is a great chance for a new ownership to demonstrate its new vision. It was a great chance for the fans to also play a part by seeing some professional ballplayers show off the new uniforms. Fans were also able to purchase new items, which is and was also key in this decision to rebrand the ballclub. By reconnecting with the fans and actively engaging them, the Astros have done a great deal to show the fans they are an active ingredient to success.

The Astros rebranding was a chance to give the Astros fan base something to get excited about after a historically bad 2012 season. A little positive press goes a long way, the following headlines and stories resulted from the Friday night event in Houston:

A rebranding or a relaunching like this can really be a good thing, for any business. Done right, it can give you the chance to gain earned media and it can give you a reason to announce yourself and your business all over again. Sure the pro sports teams have an advantage, and plentiful national news networks ready to report at the drop of a hat, but in your market, whether small town USA or all of the USA, there is always someone ready to report on your rebranding.

Have you witnessed the changes that other teams have gone through? Did you see a team do either a really good or a really bad job with the rollout? Publix and the Miami Dolphins Blend Together

As football talk is in the air, I’m reminded of last summer and a great display I saw. I was in Miami where I went to a Florida Marlins baseball game. The Marlins play at the same stadium as the Miami Dolphins football team. This booth was in use and on display at the stadium. I thought this was an interesting use of the Dolphins logo into the name of the advertiser, specifically the “b” in Publix.

Not every advertiser name could have been properly used this same way. As an example, Avis Car Rental does not have the letters to properly accommodate the Dolphins logo, maybe another team logo, but not the Dolphins.

If you want to be a sponsor of any sports team or event, from pop warner to the college world series to minor league hockey, this sort of workability is worth thinking about before you commit. It’s one thing to sponsor a team. It’s another thing to work your logo or name into something related to the name of the entity you want to sponsor. But it can be done and it can be done well.

If you are thinking of doing something like sponsoring a sporting event or a sports team, let talk before you do it. Email Steve @ this domain and tell us what you’re thinking, or feel free to leave a message here on the blog.
