That Will Help Sell More Copies For Sure…

I saw this store display today for Sports Illustrated’s newest Swimsuit issue. Now, upfront, I don’t know who created this display, Sports Illustrated or the store that was selling the magazine. But, I have to imagine that the warning signs will help to sell magazines one way or the other.

I also find it interesting that the store went to the trouble to cover up the magazine cover, as you can see below:

Only to see the cover reveal this:

I am not sure what is so secretive about this cover, I have seen worse covers in recent years, for other magazines, and those magazines did not come with warnings like this.

What do you think it going on here? Sales ploy by the store? Sales ploy by Sports Illustrated? Too much discretion by a store manager not wanting to offend anyone? Share your thoughts.

Yamahopper For Christmas?

I’m really sorry I never crossed paths with the Yamahopper. This sweet ride was featured in a 1979 issue of Sports Illustrated. I’m sure this was quite the Christmas gift back in 1979. If you ever “drove” one of these or owned one of these, I’d love to hear that story.

Football Was In Trouble In 1979 Too

The National Football League seems to always be the subject of objections. This ad appeared in Sports Illustrated 33 years ago, in 1979. Apparently all levels of football were in trouble back then. Football is now bigger than ever, at every level imaginable. Apparently, John Underwood didn’t think football would be where it is today, 33 years ago.

Did you read this book at any point? If you did and you recall the parallels between then and now, I’d be interested in hearing your feedback.

Alka Seltzer Christmas Ad From The Past

With Christmas just a few days away, I thought I would share this ad from the past. This ad for Alka Seltzer appeared in a November 1979 issue of Sports Illustrated. It is quite interesting to see how they tried to peddle a product like Alka Seltzer back then. The parody of Twas The Night Before Christmas is pretty clever. The poetry portion of this is pretty well done. I’m not so sure the Santa with the sleigh and reindeer was necessary, but it does illustrate Christmas.

We will be highlighting a lot of older advertising over the life of this blog, as we have already in the first year of this site. If you have some ads we should feature, email to Steve @ this domain.
