What’s call forwarding? I kid of course.

This ad raises other questions of course. As an official Monday morning quarterback, I have to wonder how well this ad might have actually worked.¬†Obviously, the ad was meant to portray that a call could be received anywhere. I’m thinking they could have found a few better choices to represent “anywhere” than a sauna. But, it was 1981, maybe this was the best they could do.

Renault Le Car Ad From 1981

This is a very interesting ad from Renault and American Motors. For having been in an issue of Time magazine in 1981, this ad was apparently created for an English reader that the designers probably did not appeal to as they desired. I find the wording to be bizarre. I find the surfboard usage to be questionable, are they trying to indicate summer time? Does that mean Le Car is only good as a summer car?

The designers used the phrase “gas go slowly” twice in this ad. As I mentioned above, I find this wording to be badly done. Maybe my mindset it too modern, but with their focus on what we would now call “fuel economy”, I find their pitch to be awful. 1984 Tax Day Alka-Seltzer Ad

Today is Tax Day and when I saw this ad a while back, it seemed perfect for posting on Tax Day. This ad appeared in a 1984 issue of Time Magazine.

I think this ad is very well done, and the visuals which help convey “tax relief” with the type of relief that Alka-Seltzer provides is brilliant. The ad gets more wordy at the bottom, but where they say things like “the more you make, the more they take” and the reference to “last year’s success”, this is absolutely brilliant.

And then there is the coupon. I love the word “deduct” there, an obvious reference to Tax Day preparations.

Overall I think this is a great ad and may be among the best print ads of 1984, especially for a full page magazine ad. What are your thoughts?

1981 Chivas Regal Whisky Ad

I must admit, I have no idea what’s going on here. But, it’s winter time and this seemed like a good time to utilize a visual that involves snow.

“It’s enough to make you want to get lost”, that was an interesting way to go with this ad. Are they insinuating that the dog is lost, or wants to get lost? Is a dog getting lost the first thing we’re supposed to think of when we see a dog in the snow? Are they suggesting that if you’re a dog and you have a bottle of Chivas around your neck, attached to your leash, that you want to get lost? Any conclusion from this ad, in my mind, is difficult to ultimately get to.

We can fast forward 30-some years and we know Chivas Regal is still around, so at least this 1981 ad did not run them out of business.
